The area around the village of Almadraba de Montevela used to make a living from tunny fishing in nets (almadraba) and has hardly changed since then, because of its location within the nature reserve. It lies by the salterns have also been preserved much as they used to be, with their characteristic mountains of salt and the original church.
It lies on the south-eastern end of Almeria Bay next to the Cabo de Gata lighthouse, on the "Charidemo Promontory", as it was known to the Phoenicians. The Greeks built a temple to Aphrodite on the site, the Romans knew it as the "Promontorius Veneris" (Promontory of Venus), the Arabs as "Qabit Bahi Aswad", and in the Middle Ages it was known as the Cabo de Ágatas. Starting from this point there is a series of paradisaic coves of volcanic origin, such as El Arrecife (a nudist beach), Genoveses, Media Luna, and more...
It is in a unique spot, where sunshine, peace and relaxation alternate with leisure, fun and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. And of course there are trips to the Cabo de Gata Nature Reserve, but always returning to Almadraba and the salterns. It is an unforgettable place.
